What is "Coming Age of Day" in Japan?

As we are located in Japan, we would like to introduce some aspects of Japanese culture to provide ideas or hints for your business to be able to expand to the Japanese market.

What?
Coming Age of Day is the day we celebrate Japanese young people who are turning the age of 20 in the year.

When?
Once a year, the second Monday of January. This is a national holiday.

What happens?
Local governments nationwide hold ceremonies for young adults who are turning at the age of 20 to welcome them in their adulthood.



What can they do after the age of 20?

Japanese citizens are able to do following when they turn 20:

1. They are officially and legally independent

2. They are able to smoke

3. They are able to drink alcohols




They used to be able to get the rights to vote at the age of 20, however, the law has changed in 2015 which allowed people to have rights to vote from the age of 18.

In Japan, registration for voting is not required, people are automatically registered for voting when they turn the age of 18.

*Driving age is 18 years old and over.

What do they wear on the Coming of Age Day?

Many girls wear beautiful and colorful kimonos, and men wear a type of kimono called "hakama" or western business suits.

Although many girls wish to wear kimono, some people choose to wear western clothes as they are more convenient to move around and many times it is very expensive to rent nice kimonos.

Statistics at Glance at the Age of 20


54.67% of high school graduate will go to universities or two-year colleges in 2019.
(Male: 51.65%, Female 57.77%)


*Meaning less than half start working after high school (at the age of 18).

So, about more than half are in the college at the age of 20, and the rest half will be working.

About 2 % of male are married
About 3% of female are married

The number changes as they turn the age of 30
About 45% of male are married
About 59% of female are married
